Here are a few photos from the 1994 South Gate Christmas Parade on Tweedy Blvd. in the city of South Gate, CA, a working-class Mexican neighborhood in south-east Los Angeles that was despoiled by Albert Robles in the early 90s.
This is an old-fashioned event that, as I recall, would take place on the second Sunday in December. This year, of course, it was cancelled because of the pandemic. I would attend to document community event, and this event was big in part because it had television coverage on local channels, and the hosts who provided coverage were Charley Tuna (a local radio and television personality from the old years who passed away some time ago) and Xiomara Galindo. I wanted to see this diverse community as well as appreciate the marching bands competing in one of the last events (not counting the Rose Parade) that would feature these units.
These photos evoke such a sense of nostalgia.
